FAQs about Invisalign

Get all of your questions answered about this nearly invisible orthodontic treatment.

Invisalign has been a popular way for teens and adults to get a straighter smile and there’s a reason why so many people0947240001555614634.jpg are turning to this clear orthodontic system. Of course, we know that most patients who are wondering whether or not they can benefit from Invisalign may have questions. Our Piscataway, NJ, dentists Dr. Nainesh Desai and Dr. Warren Lorch have compiled the top questions about Invisalign to help you decide.

What is Invisalign?

Traditional braces use brackets and wires to help shift teeth into their ideal position while Invisalign uses a set of clear removable aligners that fit over teeth like a mouthguard to gradually move teeth into place. Invisalign does not contain any metal parts.

What issues can Invisalign treat?

It’s important to understand what Invisalign can and can’t do for your smile so you can decide if this is the right approach. Invisalign may be the best solution for you if you are dealing with:

  • Crowding
  • Crookedness
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Malocclusions/ “bad bite” (e.g. overbite; underbite; crossbite; open bite)

Who is a good candidate for Invisalign?

Invisalign is designed for adults; however, older teens whose teeth have fully developed may also be ideal candidates for this orthodontic system. Of course, teens that decide to get Invisalign aligners may receive special features in order to achieve the optimal results. If you are dealing with the issues listed above then you could be right for treatment at your dental office in Piscataway, NJ.

How often do I need to wear my aligners?

In order to get the best results, it’s important that you wear your aligners as much as possible throughout the day and night. The only time you should remove your aligners is before eating or brushing and flossing. The rest of the time you should be wearing your Invisalign trays. This should equate to wearing them anywhere from 20 to 22 hours/day.

Do I have any food restrictions with Invisalign?

Absolutely not! With traditional braces you’ll need to avoid certain hard, crunchy or chewy foods, as these foods can damage braces or wires; however, since Invisalign aligners can be removed prior to eating, you can still enjoy all of your favorite foods throughout your treatment.

How long will it take to straighten my smile with Invisalign?

The average length of treatment for adults is about one year, while teens will often wear their aligners anywhere from 18-24 months. The length of treatment may be much shorter or longer depending on the severity of the malocclusion or issues you are dealing with.
