Electric Toothbrushes vs. Manual Toothbrushes

Many of our patients ask if it is better to use an electric toothbrush rather than a manual one. Dr. Suzanne Fohl’s opinion is that electric toothbrushes are often better for certain patients but not for every patient. For patients who have medical conditions that limit their dexterity like arthritis, cerebral palsy, stroke, physical limitations, or patients with orthodontic appliances or braces, electric toothbrushes are extremely helpful in their home care regimens. For the average patient it is important to make certain that the frequency of brushing is completed at least twice daily and a highly motivated patient can achieve this with a manual or electric toothbrush. The advantage of the electric toothbrush is its consistency in strokes and timing for routine. Oral B Professional Precision 5000 has several different brush head options to allow you to customize your brushing experience. Sonicare Flexcare has a sonic oscillating action that allows you to clean more effectively than a manual brush. Compliance can be a problem when batteries are exhausted or power is out or patient is travelling and cannot accommodate large electric toothbrush in their cosmetic bag.
