FAQS about Dental Veneers

Get all of your questions about porcelain veneers answered.

If you are considering getting dental veneers it’s natural to have questions buzzing through your brain. Our Lincoln Park, Chicago dentist Dr. Allen Momongan is available to answer any and all of your questions regarding dental veneers and any other treatments you may require so you can decide whether this is truly the right option for you.

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers, also referred to as porcelain veneers, are very thin, tooth-colored shells that are bonded to the front of your teeth. These porcelain layers are designed to look just like real tooth enamel, reflecting light in the same way as real teeth so you won’t be able to tell which teeth have veneers and which ones don’t. Each veneer is custom-made based on measurements taken of your teeth.

What does the treatment process involve?

There are several steps involved in getting dental veneers in Lincoln Park. These steps include:

  • Consultation: Our dentist will need to make sure that veneers are the right choice for you. We will examine your teeth and take x-rays to make sure that teeth are healthy and strong enough to support veneers.
  • Tooth Preparation: Another reason people choose to get veneers is that tooth preparation is minimal. Before placing veneers we will remove a very small amount of enamel (no more than 0.5 mm) from the front of your teeth to make room for the veneers once they are placed. Measurements will then be taken of your teeth and sent to a dental lab. Since it can take a week or more for a lab to create veneers you will most likely need to wear temporary veneers during that time.
  • Fitting and Bonding: Once your veneers are ready you will come back in so that we can check the look, fit and bite before permanently bonding them to the front of your teeth. We will apply a dental resin between the tooth and the veneer and then harden the resin in place with a dental laser.

What are the benefits of getting veneers?

Veneers are an easy, cost-effective way to completely revamp your smile without having to go through extensive tooth preparation. Veneers are stain resistant so you won’t have to worry about them developing discolorations. Lastly, there is absolutely no recovery period associated with this treatment.

How do I know that veneers are right for me?

There are many factors that determine whether you are a good candidate for veneers. Individuals with strong healthy teeth are the best candidates. If you are dealing with cosmetic imperfections such as discolored, misshapened, or crooked teeth, veneers may be able to give you the more attractive smile you’re looking for.
