What is a dental crown?

If you have ever had to get a root canal, you are probably familiar with dental crowns, the cap-like cover placed over a tooth to aid in dental crownsstability and strength. Crowns are also used for teeth which have lost their structural integrity due to reasons other than a root canal. No matter the reason for needing them, dental crowns restore the tooth’s function, and are needed often in dental medicine.

What is a dental crown?
A dental crown is a cap, placed over a tooth, which covers the entire tooth from the gumline down. Crowns come in many different varieties, with porcelain, ceramic and resin being the most popular. These materials can be color matched to the surrounding teeth, providing a natural appearance, whereas metal crowns cannot, and remain the color of the metal used.

What are dental crowns used for?
Dental crowns are used for many reasons. Often, patients need crowns to help strengthen a weak tooth. Teeth are usually weakened due to decay, cracking or breaking. Dental crowns are also used to cover dental implants. Dental bridges utilize crowns, which fit over two natural teeth to bridge a gap due to a missing tooth. Crowns may also be used to cover severely misshaped or discolored teeth.

How does the dental crown procedure work?
During the first visit to your dentist, the tooth in question will be examined, and x-rays may be taken. If there is decay present, a filling or root canal may be performed. Your dentist will then numb and shape the tooth to accommodate for the size of the crown. An impression is made of the tooth, and sent to a dental laboratory where the crown is then fabricated. At this time, a temporary crown may be fitted until the permanent one is created. At your next appointment, the crown will be fitted to your tooth and permanently attached using dental cement.
