A dental crown is—you guessed it—designed to look just like the crown of a real tooth. The only difference, besides the fact that it isn’t made from enamel, of course, is that it is hollow. A crown is designed to fit over a tooth to improve function, restore strength and boost a tooth’s appearance. Dental crowns can be used for so much including:

  • To cover a tooth with extensive decay that a dental filling can’t support it
  • To protect a tooth that is weak or fractured
  • To improve the shape or appearance of a tooth
  • To cover a dental implant to replace a missing tooth
  • To preserve a tooth after root canal therapy
  • To support a dental bridge

A dental crown can be made from a variety of different materials, from metal alloys to porcelain. Porcelain crowns are often the most popular choice because they most resemble a real tooth. Of course, metal crowns are more durable, so our Chicago cosmetic dentist may recommend getting a metal amalgam dental crown to replace back teeth. When you come in for a consultation we would be happy to discuss your options when it comes to getting a dental crown in Lincoln Park.

Before you get a dental crown we will need to shave down enamel and reshape the tooth so that the crown can fit over it. The tooth will be prepared under local anesthesia so the area will be completely numb while we file down the tooth. We will also need to take impressions of your tooth. A lab will then use these impressions to create your perfectly fitted crown. While waiting for your crown to be made we will place a temporary crown over the tooth until it’s time to cement the permanent crown in place.

Do you think your smile could benefit from what dental crowns have to offer? If so, then The Dental Practice of Lincoln Park in Chicago, IL, can help. Turn to the restorative experts that are dedicated to giving you a beautiful smile.
