Signs You May Need a Filling

If you have ever had teeth decay, you are probably familiar with a dental filling. However, learning the signs of needing a filling to spot your decay early can help keep your filling as non-invasive as possible and avoid the need for more advanced treatments like root canal therapy or even extraction. Learn the signs you may need a dental filling to spot your dental issues earlier with Dr. Allen Momongan at The Dental Practice of Lincoln Park in Chicago, IL.

What is a dental filling?
Dental fillings are a dental procedure that treats mild to moderate teeth decay before it reaches the tooth’s inner pulp chamber and infects the tooth’s soft tissues. More advanced cavities which do affect the inner pulp chamber require a more invasive procedure called a root canal. Dental fillings are the most common dental procedure and normally take only a few minutes to perform.

What can I expect during a dental filling?
Dental fillings begin with a local anesthetic to numb the work area. This allows your dentist to work without causing you any pain or discomfort. Then, your dentist removes the decayed portion of the tooth. After this step, a portion of the tooth is missing. Your dentist fills the missing portion using a composite resin material and cures the area with a special light to harden the resin. Your dentist then ensures that the tooth fits into your natural bite by shaping it with a dental drill.

Do I need a dental filling?
Though many people believe that they should not see their dentist unless they have a toothache, this is actually the sign of a more advanced form of teeth decay which normally requires a root canal. You can prevent this by spotting decay early. Some signs you may need a dental filling include:

  • unexplained bad breath
  • sensitivity to hot and cold
  • a brown or black spot on the tooth
  • a hole in the tooth
