The Latest Advancements in Fillings at Park Dental Wellness

We know how frustrating it can be when you are told that you have a cavity. But, our Flint, MI dentist, Dr. Linda Park can help you understand why cavities develop, and how best they can be filled. We employ the latest detection technologies like digital x-ray and cavity detecting intraoral cameras that find cavities as early as possible so they may be stopped in a preventative way or filled if necessary.  The earlier cavities are found, the less removal of tooth structure is necessary.  This is why we recommend yearly routine dental x-rays, and 6-month dental check-ups, because prevention and early detection is always the best medicine!

What is the process of a dental filling?

Depending on the severity, once decay is detected, it is eliminated by removing the defective tooth structure around it.  Dr. Linda Park is very careful about the amount removed in order to preserve as much sound tooth structure as possible to support the filling placed to rebuild and strengthen the tooth. The fillings are beautifully placed by our Flint, MI, family dentist in order to seal the tooth and prevent the decay from spreading further into the tooth, or affect neighboring teeth.

What is a dental filling made of?

As with all technology, dental materials have continued to improve over time.  In the past, the best restoration for a tooth when it needed a filling was a dental amalgam, which was a combination of many metals, including mercury.  Today, composite resins dominate the restorative market, partially due to esthetic demand, but also due to the incredible benefits they offer to restore teeth. Composites are made of tiny glass particles and resin that combine to produce a strong, supportive, durable, and yet beautiful restoration that basically becomes invisible to the naked eye.

Will it hurt?

Getting a filling should not hurt.  This routine procedure is made painless by the use of dental anesthetic administered by our Flint, MI dentist, Dr. Linda Park's gentle technique of applying topical anesthetic prior to administering the anesthetic.  There are times when the decay is caught early enough, that anesthetic is not necessary, and we are able to use ultra-conservative laser technology to remove the decay.  But as always with Dr. Park, we ask you to let us know if you are experiencing any discomfort during the procedure so we can take steps to prevent any further discomfort.
