What is zoom teeth whitening?

Zoom teeth whitening uses an UV light to enhance the whitening process. Zoom is a great option if you have a busy schedule; after just one 60-minute appointment, your teeth may be up to eight shades lighter. The Watertown MA dentists at Premier Dental Care explain Teeth Whitening how Zoom teeth whitening works.

Stain removal

Over the years, stains from coffee, tea, soda, berries, sauces and other foods dull your teeth. Zoom teeth whitening removes these stains, revealing your natural tooth color. If you want blindingly white teeth, Zoom isn't the best option for you. The procedure is best suited for people who want to improve their smiles, but want a more natural look.

The process

Before you begin the Zoom procedure, your teeth will be cleaned. This is an important first step because the whitening gel can't penetrate plaque or tartar on the teeth. After cleaning, your dentist will cover your eyes, gums and lips to protect them from the UV light and apply a 25 percent hydrogen peroxide gel to your teeth. Using the UV light in conjunction with the gel will speed up the bleaching process. After 15 minutes, the gel will be removed and a fresh coat of gel will be applied. This process will be repeated again in 15 minutes.

Things to keep in mind

Although Zoom whitening is very effective in lightening teeth, it won't change the color of crowns, veneers, bonding or bridges. If your dental work is a lighter shade than your teeth, the difference might not be noticeable. If it is, you may want to consider replacing your crowns, veneers or other dental work. You may also notice some white spots on your teeth. These can be genetic or can occur if you previously wore braces. Whitening makes the spots more noticeable, but over time, they'll probably start to become less obvious.
