Cracked Heels

Cracked heels, or fissures, are a common visible foot problem. The affected area of skin is typically dry and may develop a yellowish or brownish discoloration, particularly along the heel’s edge. The area at the heel edge may also be thicker, or callused. While cracked heels may cause no symptoms other than cosmetic issues, in some cases they are painful during weight-bearing activities.

In severe cases, cracks may bleed or become infected. Dry skin is the most common cause of cracked heels. Other contributing factors include prolonged periods of standing, especially on hard floors; being overweight, which increases pressure on the fat under the heel and may crack skin; and open-backed shoes that allow heel fat to expand.
