Relieve Ankle Pain this Holiday Season

With so many events taking place in a big, festive frenzy, the home stretch to the end of the year can feel like a blur. You’ve tended to family, friends, gifts, meals, music ... but don’t forget to tend to yourself as well! Ankle pain during the holidays—whether from a sprain, inflamed tendon, or other condition—can make for a miserable experience when the times call for merriment. Finding relief for ankle pain can depend on its cause, but there are several general, conservative measures to try.

Although life might feel too hectic at the moment, taking time to rest your ankle is an important element in relieving pain. Try to avoid placing weight on the affected ankle, perhaps even using crutches or a cane (not candy), if needed. It may also help to keep your ankle elevated above the level of your heart while resting, propping it up on cushions or pillows even while sleeping.

Giving yourself the gift of ice or other external treatments can be further effective at reducing ankle pain. Ice is most effective in the few days after injuring your ankle. Apply for 10-15 minutes per hour for the first day, then every 3-4 hours for the next two days. If extra support is needed, an ACE bandage or ankle brace may be recommended. Store-bought pain relievers can also provide some relief when used as directed.

If conservative methods are not working, consult Dr. Jennifer Keller and the staff of Shenandoah Podiatry. More severe causes of ankle pain might require more intensive treatments such as physical therapy, steroid injections, or, in few cases, surgery. We can expertly evaluate your ankle and help you determine the best course of action to make sure you’re in top shop shape for next year’s holiday preparations—whichever month you choose to begin them!
