The Process for Getting Dentures

Are you considering getting dentures but have a few questions about the process? Dr. Andrew Yoon, your Orange City, FL dentist at ABF denturesDental, shares some information about the denture process.

What are types of dentures are available?

Several types of dentures are available, including:

  • Full Dentures: These dentures replace both your top and bottom teeth. They consist of a row of artificial teeth set in a pink base to match your gums. You will begin wearing these teeth when your mouth has healed fully.
  • Immediate Dentures: Immediate dentures are placed in your mouth immediately after your teeth are pulled. In some cases, they may be used as temporary dentures until your mouth heals completely and you can begin wearing full dentures.
  • Overdentures: Overdentures fit over tooth remnants. Although you may only have a few teeth fragments of remaining, these remnants often have strong roots that can provide stability for your new dentures.
  • Implant-Supported Dentures: Implant-supported dentures are attached to dental implants that are placed in your jaw. Implants replace the roots of your teeth and bond to your jawbone. Luckily, you don't need an implant for every one of your missing teeth. Just two to four implants can support an upper or lower denture.
  • Partial Dentures: Partial dentures are used if you have multiple missing teeth but don't need full dentures. These removable dentures feature tiny hooks that attach to the teeth on either side of the gap in your mouth.

How do I receive dentures?

Your Orange City dentist makes a mold of your mouth during the first step of the denture process. The mold is used to create dentures that fit your mouth exactly. If you will receive immediate dentures, your dentist places them in your mouth just after extracting your teeth. During the next few months, the fit of your dentures will need to be adjusted periodically to reflect the changes in your mouth as it heals.

When you're ready to receive permanent dentures, wax rims will be placed in your mouth first. Your dentist uses the rims to determine the correct bite and position of your artificial teeth. In a few days, you'll return to the office to test the fit of the dentures. Your new teeth will be temporarily attached to a wax base at this point. After your dentist makes any necessary adjustments, he'll send the base to your lab, and you'll receive your brand new permanent dentures two or three days later.
