Sealants and Your Child's Smile

You ensure that your child has a healthy diet and practices good oral hygiene every day. However, even with the best care, your child may develop a cavity. But this doesn’t have to be a concern if you protect your child’s smile with dental sealant. Dr. Michael Vanover is a dentist at Vanover Dentistry of Orange Park, FL. He is dedicated to providing each of his patients with the best in dental care, whatever their age.

What Are Dental Sealants?

Sealants are comprised of a thin, protective coating that can be applied to the surface of the molars. Orange Park parents find that this is a good way to protect their children’s teeth from and cavities since they are so far back in the mouth and can be difficult to navigate with a toothbrush. At Vanover Dentistry, Dr. Vanover can apply a sealant to your child’s teeth from the age of six years onwards. A dental sealant can be applied to primary and secondary teeth. Dental sealants are most effective if they are applied as early as possible.

How is Sealant Applied?

First, Dr. Vanover will clean your child’s teeth. He will then coat the teeth with an abrasive gel, which allows the sealant to bond. Once the sealant has been applied, it will be cured under a special blue light. The sealant application process is quick and simple, and your child will feel no discomfort. Your child will continue with normal daily oral hygiene; brushing at least twice each day and flossing daily. Don’t forget your regular six-month dental visits so your child can have a professional cleaning as well as a check-up on her oral health.
