How do same day crowns work?

Traditional crowns require a visit for tooth preparation, taking a mold of your teeth, and installing a temporary crown while you wait weeks for the lab to return your permanent one. With same day crowns, advanced technology allows your crown to be created and placed in a matter of hours, right inside your dentist’s office.

Same-Day Crown Procedure

First your teeth are shaped and prepared for the crown. Then your teeth are scanned with a small laser camera to record the exact shape of your teeth.

The camera sends the images to a CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) machine. This allows a virtual image of the crown to be customized to your tooth shape.

Finally, a porcelain block is selected to match the color of your teeth, and a milling machine fabricates your permanent crown right in the office.

Benefits of Same-Day Crowns:

Durable: Same-day crowns are suitable for the majority of patients who want one--they’re just as effective and long-lasting as traditional lab-made crowns. Same-day crowns are made from a single solid-material which is four times stronger than the traditional layered-material crowns from the lab.

Convenient: Traditional crowns require a visit for tooth preparation, having a mold taken, and placing a temporary crown--then you have to return to the office several weeks later to receive your permanent one. But with same-day crowns, the entire procedure takes about 2 hours from start to finish.

While your customized crown is being produced, you can receive other treatments such as fillings during the 60-minute wait. This saves you office visits, travel time, and your hard-earned money.

Reduces complications: Getting your permanent crown in a short time reduces the risk of additional pain and complications. Same-day crowns allow no further opportunity for decay and allow you to avoid the risk of discomfort and gum irritation from a temporary crown.
