Could Orthotics Help Me?

Some patients hesitate to visit the podiatrist’s office when they’re experiencing foot pain because they’re afraid that they may need surgery. But sometimes a foot problem can be resolved by simply reinforcing and supporting the feet with orthotic devices. Orthotics come in various shapes, sizes and materials that fall into three main categories discussed below. Visit Dr. Philip Caswell at Family Foot & Ankle Care, located in Sparta, NJ, for an examination to see if orthotics will help your feet.

More About Orthotics

An orthotic is a device that is placed inside of your shoe to provide extra support. It also helps balance and align the foot in a better position. Many people walk in a way that puts a strain on the feet and toes, which can cause a number of conditions including plantar fasciitis, bunions, and fallen arches (flat feet). There are rigid, soft, and semi-rigid orthotic devices—each type is designed to treat specific foot ailments. They help people do various simple activities like stand, walk and run efficiently and comfortably. Over-the-counter orthotics are available but custom orthotics correct a wider range and more specific symptoms you may be suffering from, based on your unique foot structure. With the added benefit of a digital scanner, which can capture an accurate three-dimensional impression of the foot, you will receive an orthotic device that fits well and provides support and comfort.

Types of Orthotics

Custom orthotics are designed to support your foot function by combining function and protection. There are three types of orthotics with different functions mentioned below:

  • Rigid Orthotics: Rigid orthotics control function. Your Sparta podiatrist creates a mold using a plaster cast in your foot's image. Orthotics are used in walking or dress shoes, and made of firm materials, plastic or carbon fiber, that controls motion in two major foot joints below the ankle joint to improve or eliminate any of the following:
    1. strains
    2. aches
    3. pain in legs, thighs and lower back
  • Soft Orthotics: Soft orthotics are especially helpful for people suffering from diabetes, arthritis and deformed feet. They are made of soft materials. Like rigid orthotics, soft orthotics are made from a mold in the image of your foot. Soft orthotics do the following:
    1. absorb shock
    2. increase balance
    3. take pressure off uncomfortable or sore spots
  • Semi-Rigid Orthotics: Semi-rigid orthotics provide foot balance. They are used for activities like walking and/or sports. Semi-rigid orthotics are made of a combination of soft and rigid materials, and are usually prescribed for children suffering from flatfoot and in-toeing or out-toeing disorders.
