Every day your child is growing and developing and you want to make sure that they get the proper nutrition to grow up big and First Dental Visitstrong. Even before their first tooth erupts, it’s never too early to consider their dental health. Find out when your little one should see their Chanhassen, MN family dentist and what the first visit will look like.

Q. When should my child first see the dentist?

A. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, your child should see their family dentist either by their first birthday or when their first tooth erupts (whichever comes first). However, if your child is at a high risk of developing cavities, then it’s recommended that they see their dentist by 1-year-old.

Q. How often should my child go to the dentist after their first visit?

A. Once your child starts visiting their Chanhassen family dentist it’s advised that they continue to go every six months for routine cleanings and exams; however, if your child is at risk for cavities or other oral health issues then we may recommend that your child comes in more often.

Q. What should we expect from my child’s first dental visit?

A. The first visit is a great time for us to establish rapport with your little one. Our goal is to make them as comfortable as possible so they only associate positive feelings with their dental visits. The sooner you can make the dentist a part of their normal routine the easier seeing the dentist will be for everyone involved.

We will get to know you and your child and discuss their lifestyle, eating habits and medical history. We will also discuss how you clean your child’s mouth to prevent cavities and gum disease, as well as offer up tips for how to properly care for your child’s smile to prevent issues.

We will also take a quick look at your child’s smile to make sure that their teeth and gums are healthy and free of cavities. If we notice any plaque or buildup, we may perform a light cleaning. Be sure to come with any questions you might have about your child’s oral health so we can answer them during your visit.

Is your child’s first birthday fast approaching? If so, then it’s time to schedule their first dental visit. Contact your Chanhassen pediatric dentist at Bluff Creek Dental today and give your child the gift of a healthy smile.
