The Importance of At-Home Dental Care

Get your dental routine in the best shape possible to support healthy teeth and gums.

We are all spending a little more time at home these days. Thankfully, that also gives us a little bit more time to focus on how to care for our health and wellbeing. Perhaps you’re taking a morning fitness class online or learning how to finally cook some healthy plant-based dishes. These are all great things, designed to keep you healthy. But our Mattapoisett, MA, dentists Dr. Sathvik Seshadri, Dr. Shikaha Chopra and Dr. Paola Buckley want to know what you’re doing for your smile right now.

Your Oral Care Routine Matters

Yes, visiting your dentist every six months for cleanings and checkups is a non-negotiable. If you want healthy teeth and gums these checkups are crucial; however, you can’t forget the importance of your daily oral care routine, too. After all, how you brush and floss could mean the difference between a clean bill of health and cavities and gum disease.

If you aren’t already, it’s time to start adding these habits into your daily routine for a healthy, happier smile,

  • Brush your teeth twice a day: It’s important that you are brushing your teeth first thing in the morning and again at night before bedtime. Every time you brush you should brush for at least two minutes. Avoid eating or drinking anything (other than water) after brushing in the evening.
  • Floss every day: Your toothbrush won’t be able to get into all those tight crevices between teeth; this is a job for floss! You should floss your teeth at least once a day to remove plaque and food from between teeth and the gum line.
  • Change your toothbrush head frequently: When was the last time you changed your toothbrush head? Are the bristles started to look a little ragged and worn? If so, this is a telltale sign that it’s time to toss that toothbrush head and replace it. You should also immediately replace a toothbrush head after being sick.

Your Diet (Also) Matters

What you eat can also have a profound impact on the health of your teeth and gums. Just ask our Mattapoisett, MA, family dentists. Just like the rest of your body, your teeth, gums and jawbone also require certain nutrients in order to stay strong and healthy. A smile-friendly diet includes the five food groups: vegetables, fruits, lean protein, whole grains and dairy. Avoid junk and processed foods, as well as starches and foods high in sugar (e.g. pastries and desserts; most fruit juices).
