Different Types of Orthodontic Treatments

Getting a straighter smile has never been easier for children, teens, and even adults.

Thanks to all the amazing advancements in dental technology, particularly with regards to braces, our Chicago orthodontist Dr. Felicia Mata, in the Loop, can offer a wide range of orthodontic treatments to cater to patients of all ages who are dealing with everything from minor to more severe misalignment issues and bad bites. Remember, it’s never too late to get a straight smile and our dental team can help.

Here are the most popular orthodontic treatment options.

Traditional Metal Braces

These are the braces that we often think about when we think about braces. While traditional braces have been around for decades because they provide an effective and efficient way to treat even more challenging and complex tooth and jaw movements, visually these braces have changed for the better. Now children, teens and adults will enjoy wires that are thinner and brackets that are smaller and more lightweight for an overall easier and more comfortable treatment.

Traditional braces are great for patients of all ages dealing with a wide range of misalignments. This solution can even address more severe malocclusions (bad bites).

Ceramic Braces

If our Chicago orthodontic specialist has told you that you will benefit the most from traditional braces you may be looking for a subtler option. In this case, you should ask us about ceramic braces. Instead of stainless steel brackets, your braces will be made from tooth-colored ceramic so they won’t be as visible. This is a great option for teens and adults who need braces but worry about how braces will affect their appearance.

Lingual Braces

These braces look just like traditional metal braces. The only difference is that instead of bonding them to the outside surface of your teeth, we will bond them to the backside or inside of each tooth. Each bracket will need to be custom-made to provide just the right fit. Lingual braces have become a popular option for adults who could benefit the most from traditional braces but don’t want their braces to be visible when they talk or smile. As you might imagine, lingual braces aren’t right for certain malocclusions such as underbites.

Invisalign

This has become a popular way for older teens and adults to fix gaps, crowding and minor bad bites without brackets or wires. Instead, Invisalign uses a set of clear, custom-made aligners that fit over your teeth in the same way as whitening trays. The aligners are removable but should be worn as much as possible throughout the day (only taking them off to brush and floss, and before eating or drinking). Each aligner will gradually shift teeth into the proper place throughout the course of your treatment.
