Caring for Your Smile During and After Orthodontic Treatment

If you're considering orthodontics, it's important to think about the changes you'll need to make to your usual oral hygiene routine. Your Chicago, IL, dentist in The Loop, Dr. Felicia Mata, can answer your questions about oral care, during, and after your orthodontic treatment.

Brace care basics

You'll need to use a gentler touch when brushing and flossing if you wear metal or ceramic braces. If you're too rough, you may break a wire or dislodge a bracket. When you brush, start with the top of each tooth and brush down, using gentle pressure when you reach the wires and brackets. Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against your teeth to remove plaque from your teeth and gums. Be sure to remove any elastics before brushing.

Daily flossing is particularly important. Flossing removes plaque and food debris that collects in, around, and under the wires and brackets. Using a floss threader, interdental brush, or water flosser can make this task easier.

Make sure that the toothpaste you use contains fluoride, a mineral that strengthens weak areas of tooth enamel and helps you avoid cavities. Mouthwash that contains fluoride and kills bacteria can also be helpful. Red or green mouthwash products may stain your braces. If you're not sure which mouthwash is best for you, ask your dentist during a visit to The Loop dental office.

How to care for your teeth after braces

After your braces and brackets are removed, you may notice a few spots and stains on your teeth. A thorough dental cleaning can help improve the appearance of your smile. If stains still remain, whitening toothpaste or teeth whitening treatment at the dentist's office can be helpful.

Wearing your retainers as recommended will prevent your teeth from shifting. You'll probably wear your retainers all the time at first, then eventually wear them only at night. Keep your retainers clean and free of plaque by brushing them once a day with toothpaste and a toothbrush.
