When to See a Dermatologist

Believe it or not, there are many reasons to see a dermatologist and Dr. Adam Pritzker of Savannah Dermatology Clinic in Savannah, GA wants to share some other reasons why seeking the care of a dermatologist can be beneficial.

1. Annual Skin Check

Skin cancer can be very treatable when detected early. However, some skin cancers, such as melanoma, can be fatal if they go untreated. Getting an annual skin check beginning in a patient's 20's or 30's can drastically reduce the odds of having undetected skin cancer.

2. Unusual or Sudden Rashes or Persistent Redness

Some rashes can be a sign of an underlying larger issue such as eczema, dermatitis or even some infections. Rashes that also include swelling, pus, or tenderness should also be evaluated as soon as possible by a dermatologist. A dermatologist will be able to accurately diagnose any type of rash right away and develop a highly effective treatment plan. Additionally, if a patient has skin that constantly looks flushed or red, they should seek the care of a dermatologist to see if they have Rosacea.

3. New or Changing Moles or Lesions that Won't Heal

If a new mole suddenly pops up on a patient's skin or an existing mole starts to change in size, shape or color, a dermatologist should be consulted quickly. Melanoma, which is the most dangerous form of skin cancer, often looks like moles or brown spots. Diagnosing this type of cancer as early as possible could be life-saving. Basal cell carcinoma, isn't fatal, but it is the most common form of skin cancer, and that may present itself as a lesion that won't heal. Basal cell carcinoma's may be skin-colored, red, or a dark-colored bump.

4. Painful Pimples

If a patient's acne goes beyond a normal breakout, meaning that the pimples are deep underneath the skin and painful, or if the acne isn't being helped by over the counter acne treatments, a visit to the dermatologist is in order. Over the counter medications are not equipped to handle this type of acne and a dermatologist can provide treatment options to ease the symptoms and prevent permanent scarring.

5. Hair Loss

Dermatologists can help a patient diagnose and treat hair loss. If a patient notices a bald spot or thinning hair, visit a dermatologist right away to be evaluated. If treatement is delayed for too long, the hair follicles may become scarred and permanantly damaged.
