Mohs Micrographic Surgery for the treatment of Skin Cancer

Mohs micrographic surgery is a unique surgical treatment for skin cancers. Performed in a step-wise fashion, Mohs surgery involves the surgical removal of thin layers around the cancer and offers the highest rate of skin cancer cure while sparing the surrounding normal tissue. The tissue is processed in our on-site laboratory while a patient waits in our comfortable surgery waiting area. After each layer is removed, the Mohs surgeon then very carefully checks the margins with a microscope to ensure a very high cure rate that typically exceeds cure rates achieved by standard pathology laboratory methods. Reconstruction of the defect left from the removal of the cancer is then performed by the Mohs surgeon. On average, cure rates for a previously untreated cancer are 99% and can be as high as 96-98% for those cancers that recurred after previous surgery. Because Mohs surgery is tissue sparing, reconstructions are frequently smaller and /or simpler than they may have been with other treatment modalities.

Dr. Stephen F. D'Addario is a board certified dermatologist who specializes in the treatment of skin cancer with Mohs micrographic surgery as well as other dermatologic surgery and cosmetic procedures. After completing his medical degree at the Upstate State University of New York, Dr. D'Addario completed a residency in dermatology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He then completed a fellowship in procedural dermatology, which included specialized training in Mohs micrographic surgery, cutaneous oncology and cosmetic procedures at the Dermatologic SurgiCenter in Philadelphia.
