What You Need To Know About Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical treatment to raise the eyelids. This is done by removing excess fat and skin from the eyelids. The levator muscle, responsible for raising the eyelids, may also be shortened surgically to further raise the eyelids. Eyelid surgery can be performed for medical reasons, to increase the field of vision, or for cosmetic reasons, to make the eyes appear larger.

After your eyelid surgery, it’s important to follow your eye surgeon’s instructions to aid in your recovery. It's common to have some swelling and bruising of the eyelid and surrounding tissue for the first one to three weeks after your procedure. To aid in your recovery, remember to:

  • Sleep with your head up for the first few days
  • Avoid driving until your eye surgeon says you can
  • Keep your eyelid clean
  • Avoid rubbing your eye for at least 2 weeks
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses for about 2 weeks
  • Avoid wearing eye makeup for 2 weeks
  • Avoid strenuous activity until your eye surgeon says you can
  • Apply an ice pack to the area to limit swelling
  • Take over-the-counter pain medication as needed

If you have removable stitches, your eye surgeon will remove them after 5 to 10 days. You may be able to resume going to work and going out after ten days to two weeks.
