Parties are Good for your Soul but Maybe not your Soles!

Despite the seasonal festivities, you might not be feeling too cheerful if your feet are hurting. And, if you're quite the social butterfly, you're probably regretting having squeezed your feet into those drop-dead gorgeous high heels you couldn't resist buying because now you have problem feet.

Some foot problems are more common that others and even feet that appear to be normal can give you trouble in the wrong shoes. Also, part shoes may look good but they tend to be narrow across the toes and women's shoes have the added problem of high heels. However, even men's dress shoes can be problematic because they are often slip-ons. Footwear that squeezes your toes or allows your feet to slide around will rub the skin over bony prominences. After several hours wearing your party shoes, you may have blisters which can burst and be painful.

If you persist in wearing the same shoes to more parties after the blisters heal, your troubles will not be over. The skin that is persistently rubbed or under pressure will thicken and become hard. When this occurs over a bony prominence, the result is a corn and subsequent pressure from any footwear will cause pain.

Conservative treatment includes felt padding to deflect pressure from the area and you may have to consider ditching the shoes. If the problem persists, make an appointment to see a specialist like Toronto-based podiatrist, Sheldon H. Nadal, D.P.M., who will remove the corn.

If you have structural or functional problems with your feet, you are more likely to get corns. Your podiatrist can determine how best to manage this. Treatment may include custom-made shoe inserts (orthotics) to stabilize your feet or surgery to correct the problem.
