FAQs about Gum Grafting

Gum GraftingNo matter whether our Jacksonville, NC, dentist, Dr. Jose Arauz, has already told you that your smile could benefit from gum grafting or you are just starting to do your own research on this procedure, we have the answers you’re looking for to better understand the purpose of this surgery and why it’s performed.

What is gum grafting?

The gums act as an important protective layer for teeth. Unfortunately, if gum disease or other issues set in, this can cause gum recession and the exposure of tooth roots, which in turn leads to painful tooth sensitivity and an unappealing look.

Gum grafting is a simple technique in which our Jacksonville, NC, cosmetic dentist restores the appearance of your gums by surgically placing healthy tissue into the areas that need to be rebuilt.

What causes receding gums?

There are several reasons why gums may recede over time. Some of these factors include,

  • Gum disease
  • Over-brushing
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Hormonal changes
  • Genetics
  • Misaligned teeth
  • Damage to teeth
  • Oral piercings

What happens during gum grafting?

Here are the steps involved in gum grafting treatment from our Jacksonville, office:

  1. Local anesthesia is administered into the area where we will place the new gum tissue, thereby ensuring a comfortable treatment
  2. The grafting tissue is removed from other areas of the gums or mouth
  3. The tissue is grafted onto the site to restore the gums

How long does gum grafting take?

The entire process usually takes two visits to our Jacksonville office, each lasting approximately an hour and a half each. During your first appointment, we will place the grafted tissue, and in the second visit, we will make sure that everything has healed properly.

After treatment, you will enjoy the benefit of an improved smile appearance, as well as strengthened gum tissue. Additionally, the irritating tooth sensitivity caused by receding gums and root exposure will be a thing of the past!
