Reasons You Might Need A Dental Crown

Could your smile benefit from a dental crown?

Chances are fairly good that you know someone who wears a dental crown; however, you probably wouldn’t even notice it if they smiled. That’s because a dental crown is made to look just like the rest of your natural teeth. Our Jacksonville, NC, dentist Dr. Jose Arauz prides himself on crafting custom crowns and restorations that bring strength and resiliency back into your smile. Wondering why crowns are placed? Well, you’ve come to the right place!

Do I need a dental crown?

There are many reasons why our Jacksonville, NC, family dentist will recommend getting a dental crown. A crown completely covers the crown of a natural tooth to provide a protective barrier around it. The crowns we create are made from tooth-colored materials such as porcelain or ceramic to mimic the look and appearance of a real tooth. You may benefit from getting a dental crown if,

  • You have a broken, cracked or fractured tooth
  • You have a weak tooth caused by decay, infection or trauma
  • You have a tooth that needs to undergo root canal treatment
  • You have a malformed or discolored tooth
  • You need a bridge or implant to replace one or more teeth

If you are dealing with any of the issues above, whether it’s a damaged or esthetically flawed tooth, a dental crown could help you get your smile back on track.

What should I expect when I get a dental crown?

In usually just two visits, we can place your permanent crown. During the first visit, we will prep the tooth by shaving it down and shaping it. If there is decay or an infection present, these are issues that we will need to treat first. Once the tooth is shaped and shaved down, we will take measurements of that tooth (known as dental impressions). A dental lab will use these impressions to craft a crown that will fit perfectly over the tooth. While your permanent crown is being made, a temporary crown is placed.

During your second visit, we will remove the temporary crown and then place the permanent crown over the tooth to check the bite and fit. If your crown feels comfortable and you’re happy with the way it looks, we will cement the crown permanently into place.

A dental crown can offer both cosmetic and restorative benefits for the wearer. If you are dealing with a discolored, misshapen or damaged tooth, schedule a consultation with our Jacksonville, NC, family dentist today to find out how crowns could help.
