Getting the Right Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis

When you first put your feet on the floor in the morning, if you feel stabbing pain in your heels that lessens as the day goes by, you may be suffering from plantar fasciitis. This condition arises when the strip of tissue joining the heel and toes becomes overstretched. Plantar fasciitis is quite common, particularly in long-distance runners. If you think you may have this condition, you should see a podiatrist. Dr. Edward Orman is your podiatrist at Honeygo Podiatry serving the Baltimore metro area with offices in Perry Hall, and Fallston, MD, where he can treat you for plantar fasciitis.

Types of Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis

Baltimore metro area residents have the following treatment options for plantar fasciitis. Your foot doctor will help you decide which is the best treatment for you.

  • Medication: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can reduce inflammation, and thereby lessen the pain of plantar fasciitis. Your podiatrist may recommend that you take NSAIDs daily for several weeks.
  • Steroid shots: If you are not getting relief from anti-inflammatory medication, steroid injections may help. A monthly injection can help to ease your pain.
  • Laser Therapy: With this treatment, a laser is placed upon the heel which increases the circulation and speeds healing of the plantar fascia.
  • Physical therapy: This will help you to learn stretching exercises that will ease the pain in your plantar fascia. For example, stretching your lower leg muscles and Achilles tendon can help. Gentle massage may also bring relief.
  • Surgery: If more conservative approaches fail to produce results, your foot doctor may recommend surgery. This will be used to detach your plantar fascia from your heel bone.
  • Percutaneous Radiofrequency Nerve Ablation: A nerve in the heel is identified and that nerve is treated with a radiofrequency probe to destroy that particular nerve ending thereby relieving the pain.
