Ankle Surgery in Colorado Springs

foot ankle and leg in x-ray

For as much time as we spend on our feet you would think that the ankle would be incredibly strong and stable; however, if you’ve ever stepped off the curb wrong or changed directions quickly then you may quickly realize how unstable and prone to injury the ankle actually is.

With ankle sprains being the most common injury in the US, at some point during your lifetime you may be faced with ankle problems. While most problems won’t require surgery, some injuries and conditions might.

Ankle problems that may require surgery include,

  • Chronic ankle instability or sprains
  • Ankle fractures
  • Arthritis
  • Achilles tendon tear or rupture

While sprains usually don’t require surgery, if the sprain is severe enough that it could lead to chronic weakness and instability then our podiatric surgeons may recommend surgery to reattach the ligament to the bone. Again, while some fractured ankles can heal with nonsurgical care and rest, if the fracture is severe enough to cause long-term problems then surgery may be the best approach. Sometimes pins or screws are placed into the ankle to reposition bone fragments into proper alignment.

Sometimes chronic conditions such as arthritis can lead to significant joint damage, which in turn causes severe and persistent pain and inflammation in and around the joint. When the joint is beyond repair our podiatry team may recommend ankle replacement surgery. This is common in those with advanced stages of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Ankle fusion and even arthroscopic debridement may be a better option for someone whose arthritis is not as severe.
