What Is The Bump On The Side Of My Foot? Is It A Bunion?

Image result for skiing pictures

A bump on the side of the foot is commonly caused from a bunion or a tailor's bunion.  Both of these form due to an abnormal shape of the bone and the joints in the foot.  Typically, these start to hurt because shoes rub on the bumps.  Often times, inflammation causes pain and patients commonly develop neuritis or bursitis which leads to pain with activities.

Typically, the best treatments to employ for these bumps are wearing wider shoes and using pads over or around the area.  If the pain is limiting the ability to remain active or wear shoes and conservative therapy does note alleviate the pain, then surgical options can also help.  Depending on the necessary procedure, patients are sometimes able to walk in a protective boot the day of surgery.  In more severe cases, patients may be required to be nonweightbearing in a cast after surgery to allow the foot to heal correctly.
