How Bunions Develop and Why Early Treatment Matters

Woman suffering from bunion condition

Bunions may start small, a slight bump at the base of your big toe, but over time, they can cause significant pain and impact how you walk. At Foot & Ankle Institute of the Carolinas, PA, in Rocky Mount, NC, Dr. Scott M. Martin and Dr. Peter M. Moyer help patients address bunions before they interfere with daily life.

What Causes Bunions to Form

A bunion occurs as the joint at the base of your big toe becomes displaced, causing the toe to point toward the other toes. This displacement creates the bump on the side of the foot. Possible problems that lead to the formation of a bunion are genetics, wearing tight or high-heeled shoes, previous foot injury, and some medical conditions, such as arthritis.

When the bunion progresses, the joint becomes more prominent and may cause pain, swelling, and make it difficult to get comfortable shoes.

Why Early Treatment Makes a Difference

If treated early, bunions are usually easier to manage non-surgically. Nonsurgical treatment involving supportive shoes, custom orthotics, and protecting the bunion with pads can retard progression and relieve pain. Waiting too long can allow the deformity to progress, leading to increased pain and limiting motion.

Unless treated, bunions can cause secondary problems, including calluses, corns, and hammertoe. The joint damage eventually becomes permanent, and the pain finally resolves with surgery alone.

Treatment Options

Dr. Martin and Dr. Moyer tailor bunion care to each patient’s needs. For mild to moderate bunions, treatment may include:

  • Wearing shoes with a wide toe box
  • Using custom orthotics to redistribute pressure
  • Applying ice to reduce swelling

For severe bunions or those that no longer respond to conservative care, surgery may be recommended to realign the joint and restore foot function.
