Extra Corporeal Shockwave

What is Extra Corporeal Shockwave Therapy?

Extra Corporeal Shockwave Therapy (ECSWT) is an FDA cleared technology proven to increase the rate of healing for soft tissue tendinopathies and wounds. It is an advanced, non-invasive and highly effective treatment method that enhances blood circulation and accelerates the healing process causing damaged tissue to gradually regenerate.

What conditions can be treated with ECSWT?

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Chronic Stress/Non Union Fractures
  • Morton's Neuroma
  • Diabetic Neuropathy

How does ECSWT work?

When you experience chronic pain, the body is no longer recognizing that there is an injury to repair; the immune response is disconnected. As a result, the body shuts down the healing process and the pain cycle continues. The mechanisms involved with Zimmer enPuls Pro radial shockwave therapy include 1.) the ballistic sound waves that penetrate deep through your soft tissue, causing micro-traumas that signal your body to reset its natural healing response. 2.) the energy emitted by the Zimmer enPuls Pro which causes the cells in the soft tissue to release bio-chemicals that allow for the building of an array of new microscopic blood vessels in the soft tissue. Collectively, these two mechanisms stimulate and restart the body's natural healing processes, and they are what make ECSWT so effective at healing chronic conditions and reducing pain.

Does it Work?
There have been extensive studies done on Shockwave Therapy over the past 20 years. These studies show between a 72% – 80% success rate for reducing both the size and symptoms related to plantar fasciitis and tendonitis; a 75% success rate in the treatment of non union fractures;  a 90% success rate  in the treatment of neuropathies; and a 90% success rate in reducing pain associated with neuromas.

How is ECSWT performed?
The system is comprised of a machine with an applicator that looks like an ultrasound.

It is administered once per week for a series of 4 to 5 treatments.

Each treatment takes approximately 10 minutes depending  on the size and number of areas treated.

All treatments are performed by our physician.

The doctor applies the applicator to the area and administers the ballistic waves by moving over the affected area in a very slow, circular motion.
During the treatment, there may be some minor discomfort; these areas are helpful indicators for isolating injuries.

Why consider Extra Corporeal Shockwave Therapy?
ECSWT has a proven success rate that is equal to or greater than that of traditional treatment methods, including surgery, without the risks,
complications, and lengthy recovery periods. There is no need for anesthesia to be administered during the treatment, as opposed to high-energy shockwave therapy. Patients treated with ECSWT may be active immediately and resume their normal routine the same day. Many patients find a significant and immediate reduction in their pain. Some patients may feel results gradually after each treatment, while others may need alternative therapies.

What are the possible side effects?
There have been very few side effects reported. In rare cases, skin bruising may occur. Patients may also feel soreness in the area for a day
or two afterward, similar to a strenuous workout.

Will I be in pain afterward?
A day or two after the treatment you may feel a slight discomfort ( similar to bruising ) on or around the treatment area.

Is it covered by my Insurance?
ECSWT is not covered by health insurance plans. New Orleans Podiatry Associates offers value based pricing for ECSWT; ask our office about our discounted pricing and take the first steps towards optimal foot and ankle health.
