Did I Sprain My Ankle?

Could that pain in your ankle be a sprain? Dr. Timothy Mason of Foot & Ankle Specialists of Orlando in Oviedo and Orlando, FL, shares ankle sprainsigns and symptoms of ankle sprains and explains what you can do to ease your pain.

Sprained ankle signs and symptoms

You may have a sprained ankle if you notice any of these symptoms:

  • Pain: Depending on the severity of a sprain, pain may be constant or intermittent and will probably become worse when you attempt to stand or walk. You may also experience pain if you simply press on your ankle.
  • Difficulty Moving Your Ankle: Because sprains stretch or tear the ligaments that connect the bones in your joint, it's not surprising that you may notice decreased range of motion after an ankle sprain. If the sprain is severe, you may not be able to walk easily.
  • Swelling and Bruising: Swelling can occur fairly soon after you hurt your ankle. You may also notice bruising.
  • Popping: At the moment you experience your ankle injury, you may hear a popping or snapping sound.

Sprained ankle treatment

Resting your ankle is one of the most important and easiest things you can do to promote healing. Avoid unnecessary walking for at least the first few days after your injury. Keep your ankle elevated at home and at work, if possible. Reduce swelling and pain by applying ice to your ankle four times per day for no longer than 15 or 20 minutes at a time. Wrapping your ankle with a compression bandage will also reduce swelling. In many cases, you're ankle will feel much better in a week or two.

If you have severe pain, or you continue to experience pain or difficulty walking after caring for your ankle at home, it's a good idea to make an appointment at our Orlando or Oviedo offices. Depending on the extent of your sprain, you may benefit from a boot or brace and crutches. Physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around your ankle may also be helpful. If your ankle has become unstable, you may need surgery.
