These are just a few frequently asked questions and answers about bunions:

How do I know if I have a bunion?

You will see a large, bony bump on the side of your big toe, right at the toe joint. Large bunions are typically painful, but if you have a small bunion, you may not notice any painful symptoms.

What causes a bunion?

Bunions are frequently caused by a bone deformity in your foot and are aggravated by wearing shoes that are too narrow and crush your toes. As your toes are bunched together, your big toe joint juts outward and begins rubbing against the inside of your shoe. The chronic irritation causes inflammation and eventually, a bunion will form.

Is there anything I can do to prevent a bunion?

You can do a lot to prevent bunions by always wearing comfortable, supportive shoes with plenty of room for your toes.

Can I treat my bunion myself?

If you have a small bunion, you can try wearing inserts or taping the bunion for added support.

How can a podiatrist treat my bunion?

For large, painful bunions, your podiatrist may remove any corns or calluses to reduce friction on the bunion. Your podiatrist may also recommend wearing custom-fit orthotics, splints, or other devices to cushion the bunion and help realign your toe and foot. Physical therapy and stretches are also helpful to maintain mobility.

Will I need bunion surgery?

Your podiatrist will discuss surgical options with you, after fully examining your foot, including taking x-rays to determine the level of bone involvement. Surgery is often indicated for large bunions with significant bone involvement. During surgery, the bunion is removed and your toe is realigned.
