One of the newer technologies to treat venous insufficiency is called “Clarivein”. Sometimes it is called Mechanochemical Endovenous Ablation – or “MOCA”. Like the old standbys of endovenous laser (EVLT) or RF Closure, Clarivein is designed to close leaky saphenous veins. Unlike the old standbys though, Clarivein does not use any heat to seal the vein shut. Instead it uses a combination of mechanical destruction of the inner lining of the vein combined with a sclerosant medication.
Clarivein is an office-based procedure which requires only a single needle for local anesthesia. As a result it is less painful than EVLT or RF which require multiple needle injections for anesthesia. Clarivein is essentially painless and takes about 15 minutes to perform. There is no scar and little or no pain or bruising afterwards and the recovery is almost immediate. The results of Clarivein appear to be no different than EVLT or RF.
Because Clarivein does not require any heating of the vein, it does not carry the risk of skin or nerve injury which rarely accompany “thermal” treatments like EVLT and RF. This makes it ideal for problems closer to the lower calf or ankle where these issues are more of a concern.
Like many new treatments, insurance companies may or may not cover Clarivein. We would be happy to discuss your coverage options at the time of your consultation.
