Have you stopped wearing shorts or other leg-baring fashions because you're self-conscious about your spider veins? Your vascular and vein care physicians at Advanced Vascular Associates in Morristown, Pompton Plains, and Teaneck, NJ, offer treatments that can help.
Why Do I Have Spider Veins?
Spider veins form due to an increase in pressure in the veins. Although the pressure isn't harmful, it causes the veins to dilate. As a result, you'll see wispy blue or red veins just under the skin. Spider veins often appear on the legs, but may also develop on the face, hands, or arms.
The veins can be caused by:
- Changing hormone levels during pregnancy or menopause
- Sun exposure
- Standing for long periods
- Obesity
- Aging
- Heredity (You may be more likely to develop spider veins if other members of your family have them)
How Do our Vein Doctors Treat the Veins?
During a visit to your Morristown, Pompton Plains, or Teaneck, NJ, vein doctor, he may recommend this spider vein treatment:
- Sclerotherapy: Your doctor injects your spider veins with a medication, either Sotradecol or Asclera, during sclerotherapy treatment. The solution scars the veins, causing them to close, then fade from view over the next three to six weeks. Blood that normally flows through the veins is re-routed to other veins. You may need several treatments to completely remove the veins. Each treatment is usually spaced about three to five weeks apart. Injections don't require anesthesia and usually cause only mild burning or stinging.
