There is a relatively new treatment now available for varicose veins called Varithena. Like all treatments for varicose veins, the goal is to close and destroy the abnormal veins. Varithena does this using a combination of a sclerosant drug called Polidocanol and a gas made of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Varithena combines these ingredients to make a very fine foam-like agent which is injected into the veins to destroy them.
Varithena is typically performed using only one or more small needles to numb the skin, and then the rest of the treatment injections are quick and painless.
The advantage of Varithena is that it can treat not only the saphenous veins but also the associated varicose veins bulging on the surface. This can often lead to results with fewer treatments than standard methods. Because Varithena does not use any heat (like “thermal” methods EVLT or RF), there is no concern for skin or nerve injury and does not require multiple injections for anesthesia like the “thermal” methods.
Advanced Vascular Vein Care is pleased to offer Varithena to our patients.
