How Can Your Dermatologist Help You With Acne Treatment

Blemishes across your forehead, neck, chest and arms. This acne breakout is one of your worst, and you need help to manage it. At Southeast Dermatology, our ten dermatologists help many Southeast Houston, TX, patients--both teens and adults--manage acne for clearer skin and improved self-image. Don't struggle with this common skin condition. Let us help.

What causes acne?

Blackheads, whiteheads, papules and cysts which characterize acne stem from the excess activity of oil glands in the skin. Plugged up, these glands form those iconic "zits," and left untreated, can scar, cause areas of hyperpigmentation, resemble an extensive rash and become infected. So, our dermatologists at our Southeast Houston, TX, office advise an in-person evaluation to arrive at a proper treatment and on-going maintenance plan.

Acne appears linked to:

  • The hormonal swings of puberty and menopause
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Excessive sweating
  • Tight hatbands and waistbands
  • A high-carbohydrate and fatty diet

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) states that the emotional stressors associated with acne are just as devastating as the skin changes. Accordingly, our doctors recommend early evaluation and treatment.

How we can help

Many of our patients benefit from moisturizing washes that have salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide as the main active ingredient. Also, oral and topical antibiotics heal the infection.

A medication called Isotretinoin works for stubborn and extensive break-outs although it usually is not the first choice for treatment. Laser therapy, chemical peels and surgical extraction of cystic acne prove beneficial as needed.

Some preventive tips

1. Never squeeze your acne blemishes.

2. Wash your face gently. Never scrub your skin.

3. Keep your hair clean.

4. Shower after excessive sweating.

5. Use make-up which is non-comedogenic, and be sure to remove it before bedtime.

6. Eat a healthy diet with plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits. Stay well-hydrated.
