New Training

Dr. Wellens has just completed training at the Arthrex Training Facility in Naples, Fl. She completed training in the following surgeries: New arthroscopy equipment Nanoscope, Percutaneous Achilles tendon repair, New Achilles tendon anchors, Plantar Lapidus Plate and Plantar plate repair. This is additional training to the Brostrom ankle surgery she has been performing for 20 years.

Arthrex has developed a simple, safe, and reproducible technique using the BioComposite SwiveLock® anchor and FiberTape® suture. The InternalBrace ligament augmentation repair can be used to augment a Broström procedure and allows surgeons to repair lateral or medial ankle instability. It can also be used in acute and chronic ankle sprains.

NanoScope

The state-of-the-art NanoScope™ operative arthroscopy system uses high definition, chip-on-tip image sensor technology to provide surgeons with a needle-sized, single-use camera system. The portability of the imaging system allows the surgeon to perform minimally invasive arthroscopy in the operating room using the NanoScope system as the main camera or as an adjunct to a traditional camera – in a treatment room or in the physician’s office.

Percutaneous Achilles Tendon Repair

Ruptures of the Achilles tendon are common in elite and recreational athletes. Most surgeons treat these injuries surgically to lessen the risk of long-term disability and morbidity, while providing the opportunity for a convenient rehabilitation. Historically, open techniques have been used for rupture repairs but may be complicated by wound-healing issues and infection. The minimally invasive Percutaneous Achilles Repair System (PARS) technique can be used to treat quadriceps, patellar, and Achilles tendon ruptures.

Achilles SpeedBridge Implant System

The Achilles SpeedBridge implant system is a novel concept in Achilles reattachment, following debridement for insertional calcific tendinosis. While standard anchor fixation of the tendon creates only a single point of compression directly over the anchor, the Achilles SpeedBridge implant system enables an hourglass pattern of FiberTape® suture to be laid over the distal end of the Achilles tendon. The 4-anchor construct enables a true knotless repair and a greater area of compression for the Achilles tendon on the calcaneus, which improves stability.

Complete Plantar Plate Repair System

The Complete Plantar Plate Repair System (CPR™) treats plantar plate tears and attenuation from a dorsal incision. This single, self-contained kit is available to provide solutions for this challenging-to-treat area of the foot. The CPR Micro SutureLasso™ and Mini Scorpion™ DX devices provide suture passing options in the plantar plate, while the Mini Joint Distractor aids in visualization and access to the confined space. The surgical treatment we describe reconstructs the anatomic structure that leads to instability of the MTP joint. A plantar plate repair and lateral soft-tissue reefing can restore normal alignment of the joint with anatomic repair.

Plantar Lapidus Plate

This anatomically contoured plate was designed to provide excellent fixation for a lapidus procedure. The plate is placed plantar on the first TMT joint and fixed with two locking screws at both the distal and proximal ends. The compression feature of the plate provides compression over the entire arthrodesis area. An optional Aiming Guide allows for defined placement of the compression screw in a specified direction without interfering with the proximal locking screws. In general, plantar fixation of the lapidus arthrodesis minimizes soft-tissue irritation and converts the resulting ground forces at the metatarsal head into compression forces in the arthrodesis area, thus avoiding postoperative gapping.

Dr. Wellens is trained in all these specialty procedures which allow you to get back on your feet and returning to work and the things you love to do. Call us today to book at an appointment.
