How to Avoid Complications After Dermal Fillers

Dermal filler treatments have become very popular. They are commonly used to enhance and restore lost volume, smooth lines and soften creases, or enhance facial contours. These treatments are great for enhancing your natural beauty but bruising and swelling can occur and can last anywhere from a couple of days to 2 weeks.  Therefore, it is important to plan your filler treatment with your social calendar in mind.

Fortunately, there are precautions that can be taken to minimize these.   I usually have my patients apply cool compresses or ice packs for 15 minutes each hour for the first couple of hours after treatment.  This can be helpful to reduce swelling and bruising.   You should also avoid blood thinning over-the-counter medications for 1 week prior to your treatment ( i.e. Aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen and Aleve).  Other helpful ways to avoid complications include:

  • Avoid all vaccines
  • Avoid dental work
  • Avoid procedures for 2 weeks before and after your treatment
  • Avoid alcohol consumption for 24 hours.

You should also avoid facials, facial massage, and facial cleansing devices for 2 weeks after filler placement as these may cause product to shift around.
