Keep Your Smile Healthy

During this unprecedented time of social isolation and uncertainty about the future, dental care may not be on the top of your to-do list. However, at-home dental hygiene is imperative, and now more than ever, it's important to make sure you're taking care of your teeth the right way. Dr. Brad McConnell of Harris Parkway Dental in Fort Worth, TX, is offering his patients some professional tips on the best ways to keep their teeth healthy while they're sheltering in place.

Brushing

If you're like most people, brushing your teeth has become a mindless routine. However, take some time to consider how you're brushing and compare it to your Fort Worth dentist's suggestions. Speaking of time, you may want to start by timing yourself to see how long you're actually brushing. Two minutes should be the goal. Make sure you're also using a toothbrush that offers soft bristles and a comfortable grip. Old toothbrushes should be switched out for new ones every three to four months; these can easily be ordered online and shipped to your home. Finally, avoid gritty, abrasive toothpastes to preserve your enamel.

Flossing

People everywhere are being encouraged to take up a new hobby or learn a new skill while they're staying close to home. If you've never been much of a flosser, your Fort Worth dentist encourages you to give this important habit another try to keep the spaces between your teeth clean and plaque-free. The plastic flossing picks are often much easier for people to use and give you more freedom to use whenever you want - in bed while reading or playing games on your phone, during your favorite TV show, or, of course, in the bathroom after brushing. Check off each day on the calendar that you floss, and before long, it'll be part of your regular routine!

Snacking

Being at home more often makes it easier to spend more time snacking throughout the day. Your Fort Worth dentist, Dr. McConnell, is reminding his patients to make sure they're choosing healthful snacks that don't promote tooth decay. Nuts, cheese, apples, and other crunchy fruits and vegetables are an excellent choice both for your body and your teeth. If you must give into your sweet tooth, do so in moderation and make sure you brush or chew gum containing xylitol afterwards.
