What To Know About Periodontal Surgery

In the past, periodontal surgery was an extensive and complex treatment; however, dental technology and techniques have grown and changed the way Dr. Zuch at Zuch Periodontics & Dental Implants performs periodontal surgery, making it even easier. However, before your upcoming procedure, it’s important to know what to expect. Therefore, we’ve answered the most frequently asked questions by our patients in Scottsdale, AZ, about periodontal surgery. Brush up on your knowledge so you’ll be in the know about your gum health!

What should I expect during my surgical procedure?

This procedure is only considered to be a minor surgery so it can be performed right here in our dental office under local anesthesia. During your procedure, we will fold the gums back so we can examine the surfaces of your tooth’s root. Once the gums have been pulled back we are more easily able to remove the calculus (tartar) deposits that have built up on the tooth. Once we can remove these deposits, this will allow the gums to reattach to the tooth roots and heal with time. After this deep cleaning has occurred, we will stitch the gums back up.

Will I experience any pain?

Since periodontal surgery is performed under anesthesia you should not experience any pain or discomfort during your procedure. However, it’s natural to feel some minimal soreness for a couple of days after surgery. Some patients also experience some minor sensitivity to hot and cold, which may last for a little while but will eventually go away with time. We do recommend using over-the-counter NSAIDS to help reduce pain and swelling after your surgery.

How do I care for my smile after periodontal surgery?

Some patients will receive antibiotics after their surgery to promote healing and prevent infection. Please take these medications as directed. We may also give you a special mouthwash to use for several weeks after your surgery, which is more effective at killing bacteria. Here are some other instructions you should follow:

• When it comes to eating, follow a soft diet. Think foods like eggs, cereal, applesauce, and potatoes, and stay away from anything spicy or hot. This also includes warm beverages.
• Avoid smoking altogether to reduce your chance of complications and speed up healing.
• You can use an ice pack on swollen areas for the first two days after your surgery to reduce inflammation.
• Avoid exercise for the first three days after your surgery.
• You can clean the rest of your smile, as normal; however, you should not brush anywhere near your stitches. Instead, use a warm salt rinse to clean these areas.

Is periodontal surgery a cure for my gum disease?

Periodontal surgery is one of the most effective ways to treat and control more serious forms of gum disease. The goal of periodontal surgery is to remove the tartar buildup responsible for your gum disease to help promote faster and better healing of the gums.
