Sports Physicals

Generally, students who plan to participate on athletic teams for the school year must have a sports physical or a preparticipation physical examination (PPE). This exam is done to determine if it is safe for your child to play a particular sport. A PPE can identify existing or potential health problems that may interfere with your child’s participation in a sport. Most local school districts require PPE forms to be completed and handed in prior to allowing participation in a sport or sports tryout. Plan ahead to insure your student is fully eligible to participate. Sports Physical Forms vary between counties and jurisdictions.

In general, during a PPE, the doctor will discuss your child’s medical history and perform a thorough physical exam. Medical history is important. The medical history form will gather the following information:

  • Family history of medical illnesses
  • Previous illnesses and existing health problems
  • Previous surgeries and hospitalizations
  • Past injuries, such as sprains
  • Current medications (prescriptions and over-the-counter)

During the physical, your child’s doctor will check:

  • Blood pressure and pulse
  • Height and weight
  • Vision
  • Function of the heart, lungs, nose, throat, ears and abdomen
  • Posture, joints, flexibility, etc.

PPE’s should be scheduled in advance in case further testing is needed.

Although your child’s sports physical may not reveal any health problems, it’s still wise to monitor their health. If you notice any changes, contact our office for an appointment.
