Dental Implants

Before the development of dental implants, dentures were the only alternative to replacing a missing tooth or teeth. Implants are titanium structures that are placed in the area of the tooth normally occupied by the root. Implants are anchored to the jawbone or metal framework on the bone and act as a foundation for an artificial tooth or permanent bridge. In some cases, implants can be used to attach dentures. Not everyone is a candidate for a dental implant. For a successful implant to take hold, a candidate must have proper bone density, sufficient bone volume, and have a strong immune system. The first appointment after consultation is the surgical appointement where the implant(s) is placed into the jawbone and the site is allowed to heal for several months. This gives your tissue time to grow around the anchor to more firmly hold it in place due to a process called osseointegration. During these months, the patient returns to the office for several follow up appointments to monitor the healing. After sufficient healing time, an additional implant part is attached to the implant called the abutment. Impressions are taken of the implant (s) and several weeks later the restoration is fitted. Types of Implant Restorations

The style and type of implant restoration available to you will be discussed at your consultation appointment. There are four main types of restorations.

1. Implant supported crown

2. Implant supported bridge

3. Implant supported removable denture

4. Implant supported fixed denture (hybrid)
