Asthma does NOT appear to increase the risk for a person contracting COVID-19 or influence its severity

Rutgers Institute for Translational Medicine and Science  reports that asthma does not appear to be a risk factor in either becoming infected with the Coronavirus not increasing its severity. Risk factors for poor response to Corona virus include: COPD or other severe pulmonary disease, heart disease, obesity, and advanced age. The use of inhaled steroids does not put patients at risk for this virus. Therefore it is safe and beneficial for asthmatic patients to continue all of their medications during this pandemic season. These medications would include albuterol, and inhaled steroid such as Symbicort, Dulera, Breo and others.  Allergy injections also appeared to be safe during COVID and we have strived to keep our office is open during this pandemic.

Biologic medications for more severe asthma or hives such as Xolair, Fasenra and Nucala are also safe to start and continue during this time.
