MIDWEST ENT UPDATE 9/29/2020

As we approach fall and winter, we wish to update you on your ear nose and throat health. We recommend that you have your humidifiers inspected and cleaned. If you don't have one, this may be a good time to purchase. When heaters go on, so should humidifiers. In addition, nasal saline sprays and netty pots often times aid in healthy noses and throats. It is becoming increasingly well known how important good nasal breathing is for our overall health. I am sending a link to a recent story aired on CBS News, featuring James Nestor, author of the recent book, "Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art". It is very insightful and I hope you enjoy it.

We continue to take very strict COVID precautions. We have had no cases as a result anyone coming to our office or having surgery with us at Northwestern Hospital.
Flu season is rapidly approaching and strongly encourage the flu vaccine.
We are very pleased with our results of the Inspire(inspiresleep.com)procedure for sleep apnea. This has proven to be an excellent outpatient procedure for those who are not getting good results with CPAP.
As always, we offer a full range of services for your hearing health. We provide the most current technology for testing your hearing and providing the most appropriate hearing aids for each individual.
Please feel free to call the office(312-988-7777) for further information on all of the above or to set up an appointment. You may also send individual emails through our patient portal.

Wishing you all good health and safety,

What To Expect After Sinus Surgery

How sinus surgery from your ENT specialist in Chicago, IL, can help you

If you have sinus issues and need sinus surgery, you may be wondering what to expect while you recover. Dr. Gordon Siegel at Midwest ENT in Chicago, IL, provides a wide range of ENT services, including sinus surgery.

There are different types of sinus surgery, and your ENT specialist can help you decide the surgical procedure which is best for you.

The various types of sinus surgery include:

  • Balloon sinuplasty
  • Endoscopic sinus surgery
  • Open sinus surgery

Sinus surgery may be recommended if you have:

  • Recurrent sinusitis
  • Sinus headaches
  • Recurrent sinus infections
  • Nasal polyps
  • Fungal sinus disease
  • Nasal or sinus obstructions

Sinus surgery recovery varies, depending on which procedure you have. After sinus surgery you may experience:

  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Bleeding
  • Congestion

To relieve your symptoms and aid healing, your ENT specialist may recommend:

  • Irrigating your sinuses with saline solution to clear out dried blood and mucus, and to relieve swelling
  • Keeping your head elevated to help prevent bleeding and swelling
  • Using an extra pillow to elevate your head when you sleep
  • Leaving any nasal packing or splints in place until you are instructed to remove them
  • Avoiding blowing your nose for at least the first week after surgery
  • Avoiding heavy lifting or strenuous exercise
  • Avoiding taking aspirin, which can increase bleeding

You will probably experience bleeding after the procedure. This is normal, but if you continue to bleed heavily, call your ENT specialist.

Recovery from sinus surgery can take several weeks. Your ENT specialist may want you to come in for a checkup within the first week after surgery to make sure you are healing well. If you have packing, your ENT specialist will probably remove it during the checkup appointment.
