What Are Plantar Warts Caused By?

Find out how warts can develop on the soles of your feet and what to do about it.

A wart is a harmless and benign skin-colored growth that can develop just about anywhere on the body. When a wart develops on the soles of the feet, this is known as a plantar wart. Fortunately, this is a problem that our Fort Walton Beach, Crestview, and Niceville, FL, podiatrists Dr. Cosimo Ricciardi and Dr. Neil Patel can easily help you get rid of.

What are the signs of plantar warts?

If you develop a skin-colored growth that sticks out from the skin on the soles of the feet, you could be dealing with a plantar wart. You may notice only one bump or clusters of little bumps. If you can take a closer look you may also notice little black spots in the bumps where clotted blood vessels have developed.

What causes plantar warts?

All warts, including plantar warts, are the result of a viral infection known as the human papillomavirus (HPV). The infection can enter the body through a crack or break in the skin. The infection is considered contagious so it can be spread from person to person through skin-to-skin contact or by simply using the same items as someone else. One of the best ways to protect against plantar warts is to wear shower shoes when at the gym, locker room, or communal shower. Going barefoot in these public areas can risk developing HPV.

How are plantar warts treated?

Since plantar warts are caused by a viral infection, most of the time the body will get rid of the infection on its own without treatment; however, it can take years for warts to go away. Therefore, if you’re experiencing pain when walking or standing because of your plantar warts, you may want to talk with our Fort Walton Beach, Crestview, and Niceville, FL, podiatrists about having the wart removed. From freezing the wart to a simple excision, there are many techniques for getting rid of warts. We’d be happy to discuss wart removal options with you when you come into our office.
