What Are Signs of Skin Cancer?

At Peters Dermatology Center, Dr. Gerald Peters offers diagnostic and treatment services for skin cancer that affects Bend, OR, residents of all ages. Knowing the signs of this type of cancer is the first step toward receiving the care that you need.

How Common is Cancer of the Skin?

According to the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention, melanoma and other types of cancer that affect the skin account for the majority of new cancer diagnoses. Squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma are the two most common types of cancers that affect the skin. Early diagnosis is important to ensure the best possible outcomes, and it’s important to be familiar with the signs of these types of cancers.

Unusual Marks on Your Skin

Dr. Peters recommends that you perform a self-exam of your skin every month to look for any unusual marks or growths. It may help to take photos each time, so it’s easy to identify any changes to your skin. The photos also help with the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer at our Bend, OR, dermatology practice. Compare the photos from your previous exam to the photos from your current self-exam. Look for changes in size, shape, and color. Check each new mark or growth for:

  • Asymmetry
  • Irregular edges and borders
  • Uneven color
  • Diameter that’s larger than a pea

Rough, Scaly Skin

Not only do cancers of the skin cause marks and growths on the skin, but these types of cancers may also cause your skin to feel rough and itchy. You may also notice that the skin looks scaly. These are the most common signs of squamous cell carcinoma. This type of cancer is most often found on parts of the body that are regularly exposed to sunlight, such as your hands, forehead, top of your head, nose, ears, and lower lip.

Sores That Won’t Heal

If you have a sore on your skin that bleeds and won’t heal, it may be a sign of cancer. You may also notice a crust that forms over the lesion. The sore may be painful, as well.
