What is Eczema?

Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is the dry inflamed skin condition that is common in children but can go on to be dealt with in adults as well. It is a chronic condition that has recurrences, called flares, that is problematic but is not contagious.

Symptoms of eczema include itching, dry cracked skin, thick skin, small bumps, oozing or crusting of bumps, rash or swollen skin, raw feeling skin, darkening around the eyes, and sensitivity.

Causes and Risk Factors

For some people with eczema it is due to a gene variation while others have too much bacteria on their skin. Weakness in the skin’s barrier function can cause immune system triggering that may cause eczema as well. It is one of many dermatitis types. You may never know what caused your specific case.

People with allergies, hay fever, and asthma may have a higher chance of contacting eczema and those with family members with atopic dermatitis have an increased risk too.
