What You Need To Know About Well Child Visits

Regular well child visits can make a big difference in your child’s overall health. Consider that during a well child visit, your pediatrician will:

  • Perform a comprehensive physical examination to assess your child’s overall physical health
  • Record measurements including height and weight, to be used to track your child’s growth and development over time
  • Evaluate your child’s balance, reflexes, and muscle strength

Well child visits also provide an excellent opportunity for your pediatrician to administer vaccinations. Vaccinations are required for your child to attend daycare and school. For a list of vaccinations recommended by the Centers for Disease Control from birth through age 18, please click here.

Additional steps may be included during a well child visit. Your pediatrician may also:

  • Evaluate your child’s vision and hearing
  • Order lab testing to determine if your child has any underlying illness or medical condition
  • Order imaging studies if your child has an injury

A mental and behavioral health assessment may also be part of your child’s visit. During a well child visit, your pediatrician may do a screening to assess whether your child has common behavioral and developmental conditions, including:

  • ADD or ADHD
  • Delayed learning
  • Anxiety or depression
  • Autism spectrum disorder
