Protect Yourself Against Ankle Sprains

An ankle sprain can cause you pain and prevent you from moving as you want. It can make everyday tasks difficult and interfere with your ability to enjoy sports or other recreational physical activities. Fortunately, Dr. Rodney Yen and Dr. Anthony Lo of Podiatry Associates Northwest, serving Bellevue, Issaquah, Seattle, and Redmond, WA, provide treatment and encourage healing.

Rest

One of the key ways to manage an ankle sprain is to rest it whenever possible. Although we understand that you still have responsibilities, try to avoid bearing weight on the injury as much as possible. Spend time at the end of the day with your leg raised.

One of our practitioners can educate you on a time frame of when you can start resuming your daily activities based on the severity of your injury.

Compression

At one of our offices, including our Redmond, WA, one, we'll provide you with a bandage and show you how to wrap your ankle to provide the proper amount of compression without wrapping it too tight that it affects circulation.

The compression will help ease swelling, which contributes to pain.

Ice

The cold from an ice pack being applied to a sprained ankle can help ease the swelling. This occurs because the cold constricts the vessels. The cold also can numb the nerves in the region.

Exercise Therapy

When you visit one of our five locations, you can receive exercise therapy. For this treatment, our practitioner guides you through exercises that work your ankle slowly so you regain function and flexion in the area.

Injury Prevention

Part of managing ankle sprains consists of reducing the possibility of the same injury happening again. For this part of your care, a doctor from our practice will educate you on the proper footwear to wear when you're partaking in physical activities, even if it's merely walking at work or running errands.

Our practitioner will provide you with insight on ways to reduce the possibility of an injury if you participate in sports.

Crutches

Depending on the severity of your ankle injury, we may recommend crutches so you can walk without stressing the injured area.

Any patient that we give crutches to is fitted for the proper size so they're both comfortable to use and functional.

Pain Relief

If the pain is unmanageable, our practitioner may recommend a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug to reduce your pain and swelling.

Dr. Yen and Dr. Lo of Podiatry Associates Northwest, serving Bellevue, Issaquah, Seattle, and Redmond, WA, can provide you with therapy and advice after you sustain an injury, including ankle sprains.
