Find out more about getting your teeth filled and what the procedure entails.

Since almost 100 percent of adults will experience a cavity at some point in their lives, it’s seems inevitable that you too will be faced with dental decay. When this happens, the only course of action is to have the decay removed and to fill the tooth. However, before getting your tooth filled you should know more about the process so you will be prepared the next time you see your Wyomissing dentist.

What is a dental filling?

A dental filling is used to restore decaying parts of a tooth.

What materials are used for dental fillings?

A dental filling can be made from a variety of different materials: composite resin; gold; porcelain; plastic and silver amalgam.

Why use visible amalgam or gold fillings over tooth-colored ones?

Since there are fillings designed to look just like a tooth it might seem unlikely that you would ever opt for an amalgam fillings; however, they offer some benefits that other types of fillings just can’t. The biggest advantage of amalgam fillings is that they are extremely strong and can withstand heavy forces. Plus, they are less expensive compared to other options. In fact, gold fillings can last up to 15 years with the proper care. Most fillings only last about five years.

How will your Wyomissing dentist place a filling?

First we will remove the decay from your tooth using a drill. If the decay is rather extensive, we will use a local anesthetic before drilling. Once the decay has been removed we will prepare the filling resin. If you are opting for a composite resin filling (tooth-colored), then we will place the resin on your tooth in layers. Between each layer we will use a light beam to harden that layer. We will also shape the resin through the entire process to make sure it fits the tooth properly. Once this is complete, we will polish the filled tooth to help prevent wear.

Getting a dental filling is a fairly simple and quick process, so there is no reason to feel nervous. If you have any questions about your upcoming filling or if you are worried that you might have a cavity, then call your Wyomissing, PA dentist today.
