Tummy Tuck Recovery: What to Expect

Commonly known as abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck will get rid of excess fat and skin, restoring weakened muscles which results in a smoother, firmer abdominal profile. Following the procedure, dressings or bandages may be used on the incisions or the abdomen may be wrapped using an elastic bandage or a compression garment to cut down on swelling while supporting the abdomen as it heals. There is also the possibility thin, small tubes may be temporarily placed below the skin so any excess blood or fluid can be collected and drained.

Scarring is part of the tummy tuck but there are steps you can take so that the scars are minimal. Following the surgery, your surgeon may ask you to rest for a few weeks. Under their guidance, walking can help with reducing swelling and minimizing blood clot risk. Besides following a healthy diet, it’s also important to refrain any heavy listing or doing anything strenuous for a couple of weeks. On that note, any activity that will cause stretching, bending or will place pressure on the abdomen should be avoided.

Keeping the scar moisturized by gently applying vitamin E topically once a day can improve a scar’s appearance. Sunscreen is highly advised for at least a year following the tummy tuck, though it may be best to minimize the amount of sun exposure the scars receive. Scars are comprised of new skin which means they may have a different reaction to UV rays. With the proper use of sunscreen, a scar will not appear darker than the rest of the surrounding skin once it’s healed.
